Simply enough, Bulgaria is STUNNING! Now, it might be slightly strange coming to this revelation now because I've been here for 4 score and 7 years, but, as a resident of some of the the flattest parts of the country, any hills higher than 10 meters make me excited!
This past Sunday was Saint George's Day (гергъовден) and, with national holidays on a weekend, the following Monday becomes a day off. That left me a 4-day weekend (I don't formally have class on Fridays) to gallivant around the countryside. Did someone say ROADTRIP?
My friend and fellow Fulbrighter, Anna, her awesome sauce BF, Iliya, and I hit the slopes of northern Bulgaria. Starting off, we went to скакпя (Skakliya) which was a gorgeous waterfall.
We arrived in Vratsa that evening and had a wonderful dinner at Iliya's grandmother's house. Baba Dima makes a mean cream cake, and some sweet red wine! On Saturday, we headed off for Belogradchik which is this magnificently mounted fortress snuggled in the mountains of northeastern Bulgaria. The rock formations were pretty stellar!
After, we had a cool evening in пещера венеца (Veneca Cave) followed by some relaxing views of Vratsa, a small, yet charming city.
On Sunday, we headed east to one of the rock monasteries which is actually a church in the side of the canyon. Not to be outdone, we headed to проходна пещера (Prohodna Cave) which is also affectionately named 'God's Eyes', and i'm sure you can see why . . .
Monday included a quick lunch through Lovech which is perhaps one of the most charming towns in the country! Shout out to Emily for showing us around :)
